Solar questions people ask
- How much money can solar panels save?
- It depends on how much electricity your system generates, how much of that you use in the home rather than export, and your electricity and export prices. This calculator adds up the bill saving and export income using your own figures, rather than a generic estimate.
- What does payback actually mean?
- Simple payback is how long the modelled annual benefit would take to equal the upfront installed cost you enter. It is a planning measure, not a guarantee, and ignores financing costs, panel degradation and future price changes.
- How is my solar generation estimated?
- PVGIS gives a modelled planning estimate using your approximate location, system size, roof direction and slope. It is not a promise: real generation will vary with weather and shading that are not captured here.
- When does solar make the most financial sense?
- Solar tends to work best when a good share of the generation is used directly in the home, rather than exported at a lower rate, and when your electricity price is relatively high. A south-facing roof with little shading also generates more per kWp installed.
- Would a battery help me get more from solar?
- If a large share of your generation is being exported rather than used at home, a battery can let you store and use more of it later instead of selling it at the export rate. Whether that's worth it depends on the battery's cost and efficiency — the battery calculator works through that using this solar estimate.
