Are Solar Panels Worth It in the UK?

For many UK homes, yes. If you’ve got a reasonably suitable roof, a sensible installation quote and expect to stay in your home for long enough, solar panels can make very good financial sense.
But we’d also happily tell some households not to buy them.
A heavily shaded roof, poor generation potential, an expensive quote or plans to move home soon can turn a good investment into a pretty mediocre one.
The useful question isn’t really ‘are solar panels worth it?’
It’s ‘are solar panels worth it for my home?’
Start with your own roof and electricity use
Get an estimate of generation, bill savings, export income and simple payback using figures you can inspect and change.
No sales call. No installer chasing you. Just the numbers.
When would we say no?
We’d be cautious where one or more of these applies:
- Significant shading cuts the roof’s useful generation.
- The usable roof area is very limited.
- The quote is unusually expensive for the generation on offer.
- You expect to move home soon.
- The installer’s promises rely on unrealistic savings or perfect usage.
- Expensive finance erodes much of the long-term benefit.
- The equipment is oversized for the job it needs to do.
Get the numbers first. Then get the quotes.
What does solar actually save you?
Every unit of electricity your panels generate has one of three useful destinations:
Use it at home
It replaces electricity you would otherwise buy from the grid. This avoided import is usually the most valuable use.
Export it
Surplus goes to the grid. An export tariff — including a Smart Export Guarantee tariff where eligible — can pay you for it.
Store it
A battery can hold some surplus for later. The battery has its own cost, so it remains a separate investment decision.

£10,000 ÷ £750 = 13.3 years
If the same system costs £10,000 instead, its simple payback moves to 13.3 years.
Same house. Same roof. Same panels generating the same electricity. Completely different investment.
This is a simplified illustrative example, not a forecast. It shows why installation price matters just as much as generation.
Does solar make sense in Scotland and northern England?
Yes — potentially absolutely.
Southern parts of the UK generally receive more solar irradiation, but a northern location does not make solar non-viable.

What about east or west-facing roofs?
Don’t automatically rule solar out.
South generally maximises annual generation in the UK, but east- and west-facing roofs can still generate substantial electricity. They also shift more generation towards the morning or afternoon, which may better match when a home uses power.
The useful comparison is the actual generation and value from your roof — not a blanket rule about compass direction.
Do I need a battery to make solar worthwhile?
No.
Solar and a battery are separate investment decisions. Solar creates electricity; a battery changes when some of that electricity can be used.
A battery makes financial sense only where the additional value from storing solar or shifting cheap electricity into a more expensive period justifies its additional cost.
Don’t start with ‘what battery should I buy?’ Start with ‘what problem would a battery solve for me?’
What about an EV or heat pump?
Higher electricity use can create useful demand for solar, but timing matters. An EV that is away at work while the panels are generating does not automatically make every extra panel worthwhile.
A heat pump can raise annual electricity use substantially, but much of its demand may arrive in winter when solar generation is lower.
Generation and consumption need to be looked at together.
So, are solar panels worth it?
For a suitable UK home at a sensible installation price, we’d say solar is absolutely worth investigating — and in many cases the numbers will support going ahead.
We become much less enthusiastic when the roof conditions are poor, the installation cost is excessive or the case relies on unrealistic assumptions about generation, self-use or energy prices.
The technology isn’t the decision. Your numbers are.
